Best of the Rest 2013

on December 29, 2013

The best books I read..

My favourite was definitely ‘Before I Go to Sleep’  by S.J Watson

I probably wouldn’t have picked this book out myself but for a brief time this year I took part in a local book club. This book is so good, I don’t want to spoil it, but I can say it’s a thriller and involves amnesia. It’s utterly compelling and very hard to put down!

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

This was bought for me as a birthday present and as I always do with Neil Gaiman books, I loved it! This fantasy novel is both gentle and creepy at the same time.

and my final pick of the year is ‘Faery Tale-One Woman’s Search for Enchantment in the Modern World’ by Signe Pike

I borrowed this one from the library and I think I will have to buy myself a copy at some point. I totally, utterly fell in love with it. It’s a true story about a woman who decides to investigate people who believe in faeries, although she doesn’t believe in them herself anymore, she really wants to. This book is truly wonderful and will make anyone believe in magic again!

Films and TV

I rarely go to the cinema so I only went once this year to see Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Despite having not read the books, I really enjoyed the first one so thought it would be worth giving the second one a go. I am totally in love with the main character Katniss, a very empowered young woman. The film is fast moving but also emotive. Also the characters don’t fall into the usual male/female stereotypes.

We watch quite a few films on DVD/instant stream but I can’t really remember anything sticking out particularly.

T.V wise, this is the year I finally started watching Buffy! I wasn’t sure about the first series but I’m now about halfway through Series 2, and starting to really like it! Willow is definitely my favourite character. I also really enjoyed New Girl, apart from that I mostly enjoyed long running shows like True Blood, Doctor Who and Never Mind the Buzzcocks.
