Week One of No Social Networking March

on March 8, 2015

Some of you may know that I decided that during March I would be taking a break from social networking, namely for me, Facebook and Twitter, as they’re my two vices when it comes to social networking. It was for a lot of reasons, firstly a different way to challenge myself and raise money for a worthwhile charity. I’m doing it for my local Cats protection group and you can sponsor me by going to http://www.justgiving.com/nosocialnetworkmarch- all donations are gratefully accepted even if it’s only £1! Thank you very much if you one of the people that has already or has shared, as obviously I haven’t been able to share the link apart from on the week leading up to it! So please if nothing else, please share my link and help me raise money for the kitties!!

Anyway it was for other reasons too, mostly procrastination. I spent an awful lot of time just mindlessly looking when I had a lot of other projects I could be working on. It was a way of keeping up with what friends and family were up to, which is fine, but when it starts reducing personal contact, you have to wonder how healthy that is. There’s some people I haven’t actually seen or spoke to in a long time.

So basically before I went to bed on the 28th Feb I took off my Facebook, Facebook messaging and Twitter apps off my phone so I wouldn’t be tempted and made sure in the week leading up to it that I got phone numbers from anyone I thought I would want to contact and warned I would be ‘away’ and made notes of any upcoming events etc.

Now I have reached Day 9 and this is my first blog update about it. The first day was the hardest, I would keep going to look at my phone to see if there was any notifications and then realise I couldn’t! And even though I don’t really post that many status updates or tweets, my head felt like it was full of them!

After a few days I started to stop checking my phone and my head stopped making updates. I did get frustrated a few times though that I would want to ask all of my friends something and I couldn’t just ask it on Facebook! So I’m sorry if you’re one of the people that has had to put up with lots of group texts! I also came across a birthday in my diary and then I realised I didn’t have the person’s number to send a birthday wish, so despite my best intentions I still didn’t get everything I needed- it shows how much we rely on FB for contact these days!

I’ve also found I’ve got a lot of other sites linked to my Facebook, which I still have been using, but unfortunately I did sign a petition on a site that was linked, and then it said ‘posted to timeline’ when I hadn’t even clicked on anything! Also in the last 9 days I have had not one, not two, not even three but FOUR emails from Facebook saying ‘you have notifications waiting…” like saying where are you, why aren’t you looking at your notifications!!! It’s saying something when a website emails you that many times in a week just because you aren’t there. I haven’t had any emails from Twitter.

Overall though I must admit that I am not missing it all now. To begin with it was more like I had something missing, but I’ve got used to it now. I didn’t think I spent so much time on it but now I’m away from it I’ve realised that I was spending more time that I thought I was. It’s turned out to be very good for me, as because of the time I’ve gained I’ve actually been working on those projects I’ve been neglecting like my book! I’ve also been reading a lot more and really enjoying it!

I’m sure I will go back to it when the month ends but hopefully using it in a less time consuming way! As I do think there are some plus sides to using it as well. I look forward to seeing how the rest of this month pans out 🙂
