One Month Without Social Networking!

on March 31, 2015

So today marks the last day of my self imposed no Facebook and no Twitter month. I did for several reasons, firstly to raise money for charity (Southend Cats protection- I’m still hoping to raise more please consider donating at and to remind myself what life was once like without social networking. The month has been something of a revelation. I thought I wasn’t too bad about going on social networks, after all I went them for about three months once before. However when I came away from it, I realised how much time it was actually taking up. Suddenly I had time spare! and now I had to face the projects I’d been avoiding.

Because of the spare time I gained, I managed to do a full edit of my non fiction spiritual book I’ve been working on for the past two years, so it’s now ready for a second read by a proof reader. I did the edit of the feminism chapter I’m contributing to a book. I even put together my spiritually minded poetry together for a collection I am hoping to publish.

I always read, but because I wasn’t ‘reading’ Facebook or Twitter instead, I actually read about ten times as much! I got through books quicker than I have for a long time!

I also learnt that after the initial few days of breaking the habit, I didn’t actually miss it! I wasn’t worrying about what was going on in anyone’s lives or wondering what pictures had been shared. All I missed really was the convenience of being able to contact almost all my friends in one place, rather than having to text or call people separately. I also wanted to know about the goddess retreat I am going to in May, if any news about it has come out, as that’s where all the posts are regarding it. But asides from that, I feel fine about it!

So tomorrow I will be back “on” social media but I have decided from now on to do my best to take a different approach to it. Firstly I have decided not to put any of it back on my phone. I don’t really need to have it at my beck and call. I can look at it at home on the computer. I will make sure I put any projects I am working on etc first on my priority list, rather than avoiding them by procrastinating especially on Facebook. I think there may be other things that come up too, but for now, this would be a large change for me.
