August Goddess Project- Week One- Sophia

on August 1, 2015

Sometime ago I got given some Goddess cards. The cards themselves are very simple, they are only small, have no pictures, they simply have a name of a Goddess and then a little quote underneath to reflect on. I have to say as much as I tried, I couldn’t really connect with them. I use lots of cards, but I’m used to ones with images to interpret and understand. With these cards, I couldn’t do that.

A few months ago, I did one of my women’s circle’s meet ups on the theme of “Goddess Energy”. As part of this, we all picked a Goddess card. I said this Goddess would be able to help them in some way. They also had to go and research all they could about the Goddess they picked. I did the same with my card. I picked ‘Changing Woman’ and then went and learnt all I could about her. I found she deeply resonated with me.

Anyway, with this in mind, the last time I got the cards out to use for my daily card, (I pick a card everyday to guide me through the day) I thought this time I would do more than just simply pick the card. I researched everyday to find out where the Goddess was from and what she represented. I then prayed to that Goddess that day bearing this information in mind. Finally I felt a connection with the cards! Every Goddess was relevant to each day and I could feel her presence.

As a pagan of over 15 years, I thought I had a fairly good grasp on the different Goddesses. But as much as it shames me to admit it, I realised that although I work with Goddess energy, it has always been as all the aspects combined, not really looking more into her different names and guises. But now it’s time for me to learn a bit more about the individual aspects of the Great Goddess.

I have decided to do a special ‘Goddess’ project during August. I won’t be picking a card every day, but I will be picking one Goddess card out a week, and then on that week, I will be focusing on that particular Goddess. So I will find out all I can about her, where’s she from, what she represents. But I will also be praying to that Goddess, journeying to her, invoking, working with her in all the ways I can. And I will be writing all my experiences and sharing what I have learnt on here. I’ll write a main post on Saturdays which will tell you about the Goddess, then will add more blog posts during the week depending what comes up.

My Goddess I’ve picked for my first week, on the pagan festival of Lammas is ‘Sophia’

I found this interesting right away as my main spirit guide is called ‘Sophie’ and when I researched the name before I found out it means ‘Wisdom’

As such, Sophia is the Goddess of Wisdom. She is honoured in many religions aside from paganism. She is also honoured in some forms of Christianity, and is mentioned in the wisdom books of the bible.

Her symbol is the dove which represents Spirit, and she wears a crown of stars.

Her origins are impossible to trace, as she can be traced back to every era, culture, and society in some form.
